Lithium Processing Plant

Mineral ores are one of the main sources of lithium. The main ores for commercial extraction of lithium are: spodumene, lepidolite, petalite, amblygonite, and eucryptite. Among them, spodumene has the highest lithium content. After the ore is mined, lithium is extracted through steps such as crushing, grinding and flotation. Sometimes, combined processes such as gravity and magnetic separation will further refine it to increase the purity of lithium concentrate.

Extraction of Lithium from Its Ore

Lithium ore beneficiation processes include positive flotation, reverse flotation, gravity separation, magnetic separation and combined beneficiation, etc. For example, when lithium is extracted from spodumene, flotation is mainly used, combined with gravity separation and magnetic separation methods for separation.

Positive flotation: Add fine-grained lithium ore into alkaline slurry. After high concentration, strong stirring, multiple washing and desliming, fatty acids or soaps are added as collectors to directly float the lithium ore. After several rounds of concentration, the lithium concentrate with a grade greater than 5% Li2O and a recovery rate of 70% to 75% is obtained. 
Reverse flotation: The reverse flotation method also completes flotation in an alkaline medium. Lime is used to create an alkaline environment, starch and dextrin are added as inhibitors, and pine oil is used as a frother. Under alkaline medium (pH 10.5~11.0), dextrin can effectively inhibit lithium ore, and then amine cationic collectors are used to capture silicate gangue minerals such as quartz, feldspar, and mica to achieve reverse flotation.

When it is difficult to obtain qualified lithium concentrate by single flotation, a combined flotation method can be used. Common ones include flotation-magnetic separation and flotation-magnetic separation-gravity separation.

Lithium ore flotation-magnetic separation method: Lithium concentrate is obtained by flotation in an alkaline environment, and then the iron minerals in the lithium concentrate are removed by a strong magnetic separator.
Lithium ore flotation-magnetic separation-gravity separation method: First, tantalum, niobium and other minerals are removed by gravity separation, and the gravity separation tailings are concentrated and desludged, and then oleic acid and oxidized paraffin soap are added for slurry adjustment. Flotation is carried out under high alkalinity conditions to separate lithium concentrate. Finally, strong magnetic separation technology is used to remove iron impurities and further purify the lithium concentrate.

1. First, the raw ore is fed into the hopper by an excavator or truck, and then evenly fed to the jaw crusher by a trough feeder for crushing operations.
2. The crushed materials enter the vibrating screen with a 20mm mesh, and the materials larger than 20mm are screened out by the vibrating screen and returned to the jaw crusher for re-crushing.
3. Qualified minerals of 0-20mm are transported to the next storage bin by a belt conveyor.Materials of 0-20mm are evenly fed to the ball mill by the electromagnetic vibrating feeder for grinding operation.
4. The ground materials are classified by the spiral classifier, and the overflow of the spiral classifier is fed by the sand pump to the cyclone group for classification again.
5. The overflow from the cyclone group is tailings, and the underflow is transported to the mixing barrel for thorough mixing, and then transported to the flotation machine. After adding chemicals, the lithium concentrate is flotated after a full reaction.
6. The floated lithium concentrate is transported to the thickener by a sand pump for preliminary dehydration, which greatly increases the density of the concentrate and facilitates dehydration again. The overflow from the thickener flows to the clean water pool, and the underflow from the thickener is sent to the disc filter by the high-pressure pump.
7. The disc filter dries the minerals processed by the thickener again. The clean water after the disc filter presses the concentrate is also discharged into the clean water pool. The material dried by the disc filter is the final lithium concentrate. Allows for easier storage and transportation.
